St. Pete Announces Commission to Combat Misinformation About Development

With several major projects rising across the city, officials have announced the formation of a new commission aimed at addressing what they describe as “persistent public misinformation” surrounding development in St. Petersburg.

According to city leadership, the commission will focus on improving the community’s understanding of ongoing projects, ensuring residents have access to “clear, persuasive information about the long-term benefits of growth.”

Officials pointed to similar efforts in other states, including proposed legislation in Ohio to establish a Data Center Study Commission intended to address misinformation and build public confidence around large-scale infrastructure projects. Supporters say the approach could help bring clarity to complex issues as St. Petersburg continues to attract new investment.

“There’s been a noticeable gap between what people think they want and what they actually need,” one council member said. “This initiative is designed to close that gap and help align public perception with the outcomes we want.”

The commission is expected to host informational workshops, publish educational materials, and provide guidance during public meetings to help clarify common misunderstandings related to displacement, density, and infrastructure. Materials will be designed to encourage the uniform acceptance of development priorities across the city.

City leaders emphasized that educating the average citizen will be critical as development continues to accelerate, noting that better-informed residents are less likely to create problems.

The commission is expected to begin work immediately.
