St. Pete Promises to “Make It Rain” for $666M Marina Redevelopment Project

The City of St. Petersburg is moving forward with the luxury redevelopment of its downtown marina, a long-awaited project now expected to cost approximately $666 million.

Under the new plan, the city will retain full ownership and control of the project, allowing city leaders to oversee and direct the distribution of funds.

Plans include replacing docks, upgrading utilities, rebuilding seawalls, and expanding luxury access. Small boat slips will be removed to make room for what officials are calling “higher performing waterfront opportunities.”

To demonstrate transparency, the city is hosting a ceremonial kickoff event featuring rappers Lil Wayne and Fat Joe, who will join Ken Welch at the marina for a live performance. Residents with questions about project funding costs are invited to attend the free concert.

“We’ve heard concerns about who is paying for this,” one council member said. “And we want the public to feel confident that they can actually see where this money is going.”

Officials also addressed concerns about displacement, noting that while some long-standing marina users may be affected, the project is designed to ensure the waterfront is available for the people who actually deserve it.

When asked whether taxpayers would ultimately bear the cost, the city emphasized that the marina is expected to generate revenue over time, offsetting expenses through what it described as “ongoing and sustained financial activation.”
