St. Pete Encourages Residents To Prepare For Another Crane Collapse Downtown
ST. PETERSBURG — City officials are encouraging downtown residents to familiarize themselves with their nearest crane impact zone.
The city recently unveiled a new interactive “crane preparedness” map allowing residents to enter their address and determine whether they live within the potential drop zone of an active tower crane.
Officials described the tool as a major advancement in public safety and said it reflects the city’s continued commitment to luxury development.
“This is about preparedness,” one official explained during Thursday’s presentation. “Residents deserve to know where these cranes are about to land.”
The map currently displays a large impact radius surrounding a crane at the 3rd & 3rd luxury apartment tower downtown, though officials stressed that crane-related incidents are not currently expected.
“Living under cranes is the best part of living in St. Pete,” redevelopment consultant Graham Whitmore said. “Frankly, if you’ve never wondered whether a large piece of construction equipment could come crashing through your ceiling, are you really even living?”
The city has also expanded its emergency notification systems to include crane-related alerts, allowing residents to receive text messages, phone calls, and emergency notifications if a crane-related incident is pending.
Officials say the alerts are designed to give residents additional time to prepare for impact.
“It’s about saving lives,” Whitmore explained. “A lot of people don’t realize they may already live inside a planned drop zone.”
Officials stressed that residents outside current crane impact zones should not panic, as additional cranes are expected downtown during the coming hurricane season.
