Why a T-Shirt and ’Zine Maker Wants to Rebuild the Rand Motel on U.S. 19

Every Saturday this month, local T-shirt and ’zine maker, Valentín Esparza, has been setting up a folding table along U.S. 19 near the former site of the Rand Motel, selling self-designed merchandise to fund what he describes as a “culturally significant restoration project.”

His goal, he says, is simple: raise enough money to bring the Rand Motel back.

The motel, which was demolished roughly two years ago, operated for decades in a stretch of unincorporated Pinellas County just outside St. Petersburg city limits. While some residents recall its distinctive signage and mid-century motor court layout, others remember it as a more… specialized destination.

“Places like that just don’t exist anymore,” Esparza said, gesturing toward a rack of shirts featuring a photo of the motel’s iconic sign. “It served a very specific need in the community.”

According to him, the proposed rebuild would stay true to the original concept, including “short-term occupancy options,” “in-room amenities,” and a “retro media experience.”

County officials have not commented on whether such a project would be permitted under new regulations, but noted that proposals centered around hourly rentals, private jacuzzis and curated adult film libraries may not align with the corridor’s long-term vision.

Undeterred, Esparza says he plans to continue fundraising throughout the summer.

“If people understand what this place meant,” he said, “they’ll want it back.”
