Mayor Welch Expected To Make Final Gas Plant Decision Next Week
ST. PETERSBURG — Mayor Ken Welch is expected to make his final decision on the future of the Historic Gas Plant District next week.
The nearly 100-acre site is expected to be redeveloped into an upscale 15-minute district featuring luxury housing, commemorative hardscaping, and state-of-the-art Flock cameras.
Officials say the development will honor the memory of the displaced Gas Plant community through a variety of performative gestures, including a bronze plaque outside a proposed rooftop cocktail lounge and dog spa.
“This project has deep personal meaning for me,” Welch said. “My family has been involved with this site for generations. As you can see, we’ve been doing a great job. It’s important that we see this through.”
Officials confirmed the mayor’s plan will include luxury residential towers with names carefully chosen to honor the people who once lived there while ensuring none of their descendants can afford to return.
Several streets, parks and gathering spaces are also expected to be named after former residents.
“I think it’s cute,” said Ashley Monroe, a 27-year-old marketing consultant who moved to St. Petersburg last year. “I don’t know what a gas plant is, but I love living somewhere with so much culture.”
Some residents have questioned whether such a significant decision should be made before the upcoming election. Redevelopment consultant Graham Whitmore said delaying the announcement could create unnecessary uncertainty.
“What if voters elect Brandi Gabbard?” Whitmore said. “We might have to wait a week or two for her to embrace our vision. That’s valuable time we simply don’t have.”
To help preserve local culture, officials confirmed several murals acknowledging the area’s history will be installed throughout the district, allowing childless millennials to reflect on displacement while waiting for valet service.
At press time, Welch was reportedly preparing additional proclamations regarding the future of Albert Whitted Airport and the outcome of the upcoming election.
