Winter Pride Laser Display Was “Proof of Concept” for Future Demolition Program
City officials acknowledged this week that a rainbow laser display staged during Winter Pride festivities also functioned as what administrators described as a “proof-of-concept demonstration” for emerging demolition technologies.
The clarification followed persistent questions from reporters regarding the decision to direct concentrated light arrays at a vacant structure in South Pasadena.
While representatives emphasized the installation’s role in the city’s Winter Pride celebrations, staff confirmed the event also provided an opportunity to evaluate the system’s potential within a broader class of “non-contact structural intervention platforms.”
Officials declined to elaborate on the technology’s full capabilities, but characterized preliminary performance data as “highly encouraging.”
No buildings were affected during the experiment, according to the city.
